This interdisciplinary course introduces students to Indigenous studies in a digital world. We will study Indigenous sovereignty and representation, new media, the historical impact of digital technologies on Native communities, and innovative digital projects by Native artists and communities. We will discuss documentary, community video, animation productions, GIS (global information systems), video games, and social media sites.  Students will have opportunities to meet scholars and artists working with new media through classroom visits and Skype interviews.  Assignments will include weekly short response papers and independent audio-visual projects, as well as a final project. We will also integrate community outreach into the curriculum through online participation of students from the Kiowa Kids, an Indigenous language immersion and storytelling program.
